This is a cropped picture from Bill Wise's Charis Guitars brochure. I like the inlay. I have an idea or two how it's done.

Anybody doing these types of inlays? Care to share your techniques? Please post pictures!

Draw out the pattern, pierce the inside of the material your making the border out of with a small drill bit, cut out the inside, fill with an ebony (or other material) cut out piece to match the pattern from your original drawing, then glue it into the pierced piece.
Then go and cut out the border as thin as you want to. File to thickness. Inlay the rest normally.

Here is a link to a picture of a bordered black and gold pearl fretboard inlay I did last year.

Scroll down and left to see the fretboard markers.

Really nice, Craig. Love the peghead inlay. Which got me to wondering about the tuners? This is a classical, right? Is the builder using pegs, or what? Seems like string slots would wipe out that beautiful inlay....

Hi Steve.
Yes it is a classical. However it is an "experimental" one at that. If you can get a copy of Guitarmaker #49 (ASIA'S magazine- you all know that by now! )
On Page 26 there is a joint article about the guitar, and the inlays by myself and Dr. Doug Fields.
The tuners are standard acoustic tuners with ebony butons. The Chimaera (the deep water shark relative- the fish on the headstock) was designed to fit within the tuner washers, and it does. There is a pretty long story behind the guitar and the inlays. If you can't get a copy I'll send you a copy.
O.K so I can't believe it took me this long to figure out how to post an image! (sorry Lance )

Craig
